It was in 2015 that I decided to quit my sales job to start making comics and create The Paper Robots podcast. Since then I’ve written and worked with various artists as I self-published a 4 issue comic and two zines. The Paper Robots podcast is about the conversation with people working in various industries (featured guests include Sina Grace, Kelly Fitzpatrick & Matt Hawkins) and how the creative process, careers, and personal lives work for all of them.
It all really began with being named after Wolverine as my first exposure to comics. I grew up watching super hero cartoons in a handmade Robin costume and my mom would draw characters with me as I would tell stories. I was in college for short story writing when I was introduced to two books changed my whole idea of storytelling and comics forever, Essex County (Jeff Lemire) and Y: The Last Man (Brian K. Vaughn). I no longer looked at comic as just super heroes, but my fiction and “slice of life” stories have a place in the industry.
The major things in my life are the result of being involved in comic books. I met my soon to be wife, at a comic shop. Some of my best memories come from playing Batman & Robin with my brother and going to comic conventions with friends to meet our favorite writers/artists. I moved from Arizona to Portland OR to further my career in comics. As most writers we use storytelling to express ourselves and answer questions, for me the stories in my head always showed up in panels and word balloons. I believe comics are the option for me as a writer.
